COOKING WITHOUT LOOKING
Blind Life in Durham (B.L.IN.D) has produced a cookery book for  visually impaired and blind people

in large print and audio format.  The Helme Park Hotel, nr Crook, kindly provided B.LIN.D with the room

and catering for the book launch on the 24th July 2012. The hotel also  used some of our recipes for the

rest of

the launch week. A raffle was held for the event, the prize included a copy of our cookery book as well

as a pair of oven gloves with fingers kindly  donated by The Oven Glove Company (www.glovebuddies.com )

and a Marmite  gift set. The winner was a member of B.L.IN.D. Musical entertainment at the launch was

provided by Chyrelle Addams a singer who sang a variety of songs from the sixties and seventies- much  appreciated!

Jim Welch Chairman of B.L.IN.D gave an introductory speech. Sandy  Denney for the Three Towns Area Action Partnership (who provided a large part of the funding for the project) spoke about the importance of  lifestyles, independence and wellbeing and congratulated B.L.IN.D on the book. Suzy Galbraith for Jack Drum Arts, who helped facilitate at the  planning meetings, spoke about the steep learning curve of being a
sighted person involved in the production of a printed book for  partially sighted people. Peter Douglas from Ulverscroft (large print  and audio publishers) described the cookery book as a form of “self help”. Denise Tyerman from Durham County Council Library Service spoke  about the libraries on wheels. Maureen Stansfield, manager of Durham  County Council Sensory Support Team, said the book will be an invaluable resource and the kind of initiative that will enhance people’s lives. She bought copies for use as a rehabilitation resource.
